Erik Rudý (ve staré severštině Eiríkr Rauði, norsky Eirik Raude) žil přibližně v letech 950 – 1003. Svou přezdívku zřejmě získal podle rudých vlasů a vousu, ale možná i podle své prudké povahy. Je považován za objevitele a prvního osadníka a průzkumníka Grónska (asi roku 982). Historickým pramenem pro údaje o životě Erika Rudého je „Sága o Eriku Rudém“ a islandská kronika „Landnamabok“.
Píseň pojednává o Erikově ženě, Thjodhild, která čeká na návrat svého muže z objevitelské plavby.

Erik the Red (Eiríkr Rauði in Old Norse, Eirik Raude in Norwegian) lived from about 950 to 1003. He probably got his nickname from his red hair and beard, but perhaps also from his violent temper. He is considered to be the discoverer and first settler and explorer of Greenland (c. 982). Historical sources for information about Erik the Red's life are the "Saga of Erik the Red" and the Icelandic chronicle "Landnamabok".
The song is about Erik's wife, Thjodhild, who awaits her husband's return from a voyage of discovery.
